[my Emilia Romagna #8] From Speyer to Ravenna: 5 days in Emilia-Romagna
Elisa Mazzini May 2, 2012The following “my Emilia-Romagna” is a special one. It’s an account of more voices put together, it’s the choral idea a group of people got while travelling and discovering the treasures of Emilia-Romagna.
We could start explaining you as follows: a group of over 30 people coming from quite far away, a huge blue and yellow bus, 12-hour journey, some breaks and a large amount of wish to discover more about the italian traditions.
These were the city dwellers of Speyer, an ancient town in Germany twinned with the city of Ravenna since 1989. The two cities are used to meet every year in a sort of exchange, and the group of Speyer usually comes in Italy the week right after Easter. Having established a good relationship via social networks with this so-called Freundeskreis Speyer-Ravenna and his Chairwoman Barbara Mattes, we thought to meet her and her group in order to know them in person, have a talk and enjoy together this mild spring.
The destinations of this 5-day trip were [obviously ;-] Ravenna, but also the maritime Cervia, Sogliano al Rubicone and its famous Fossa cheese, and Bologna, because the will of those people to discover more about the local culture and tradition goes way beyond the walls of a single town and spreads all over the region.
We met them in Bologna, where we had the chance to visit the city centre together and to get their points of view, accounts and impressions. It was a unique experience for us: we rediscovered our own places in a different light and from the point of view of the foreign tourist.
However, we don’t want to tell you how this experience was for us but rather how it was for them.
What they most enjoyed was the hospitality they got during all they stay here in the region, the landscape, the wine and food traditions, the large amount of fascinating mosaics in Ravenna, the tour guide of the city centre, the unusual huge lunch (it lasted more than 3 hours! And they got fish; “so much fish”, they say, “we don’t have it at ours. It was awesome!”) they had at the seaside in Cervia and its salt museum, the good Fossa cheese in Sogliano al Rubicone (where they took part in its preparation), the ancient buildings of Bologna and its two towers, its little shopping streets and its good tortellini…
Everything was new and special for them, and it was interesting for us to re-discover our own land from a different point of view. While meeting them, talking with them and spending some time with them we really got how much fun they had by living something new.

Everything fit prefectly. Unfortunately we’ll now have to eat vegetable soup at home again, in order to get our figure back.

“Everyone was really heplful and we were provided with a lot of information. The visit to the mosaics of Ravenna was a must. I totally enjoyed the rest as well: the meeting with the Freundeskreis, the hospitality, the hotel, the nice singing of the choral group Canterini Romagnoli, the salt museum, the big fish lunch in Cervia, the preparation of the Fossa cheese and the landscape. Then of course Bologna as well: the city with its magnificent buildings, the two towers and the churches were impressive. Obviously the good tour guide who accompanied us was really helpful. The world-longest arches (38 km) have been really useful by that rainy weather. And I also enjoyed all the little special and typical shops in the centre.
I’m glad, I could experience all that”.
Finally, Barbara (Chairwoman of the group Freundeskreis Speyer-Ravenna): “We were all really enthusiastic about the trip. Especially the touristic guide in Ravenna and the good wine and food are appreciated. The lunch we had at the seaside with all that fish was unforgettable, we actually don’t have those that. The fact we ate for more than 3 hours was gorgeus. One fellow traveller bought 6 pairs of shoes and 3 handbags! Shoes: they are always beloved, everyone here says: Such shoes as those in Italy, we don’t find them here!”.

Ravenna and Speyer are twinned since 1989. Barbara Mattes is since 2004 Chairwoman of the Freundeskreis Speyer-Ravenna. Every year during Easter a bus brings a group of citizens from Speyer to Ravenna, and the “ravennati” (the inhabitants of Ravenna) are going as well twice a year, for the Brezelfest in Juli and for the Christmas Market in December, to Speyer.

,,Meine E-R”: Eine Art eigener Erzählung, um über seine eigene Erfahrungen in der Emilia-Romagna zu berichten.
Dieses Mal haben wir einen ganz besonderen Beitrag bekommen, der aus der kleinen Stadt von Speyer, Deutschland, kommt. In der Woche nach Ostern ist eine Gruppe über 30 Leuten in der Emilia-Romagna zu Besuch gekommen. Speyer ist schon seit 1989 Partnerstadt mit der italienischen Ravenna und jedes Jahr werden gegenseitige Reisen in den beiden Ländern organisiert.
Die Bürgerreise des Freundeskreis Speyer hat dieses Jahr ein gefülltes Programm hier in der Emilia-Romagna vorangesehen.
In nur 5 Tagen haben sie viel mehr als erwatet erlebt und genoßen. Wer weiß schon welche die Etappen dieser Reise gewesen sind?
Ihr Aufenthalt war natürlich in Ravenna bei ihnen Freunden des Freundeskreis, wo sie gemütlich ihre Abende gemeinsam verbracht haben. Abends haben sie ein typisch romagnolisches Essen und danach den traditionellen Gesang der Gruppe ,,Canterini romagnoli” erlebt.
Ein ganzer Mittwoch haben die Bürger Speyers Ravenna besichtigt, zusammen mit einer ,,Sptizenführerin”, wie sie die Gruppe selbst beschreibt hat. Was ihnen besonders begeistert hat waren die hunderte Mosaiken, aber auch das Stadtzentrum und das gute Essen.
Am nächsten Tag haben die Reisende unter der Sonne bei der Zubereitung des Grübenkäses mitgemacht. Viele haben ihn gekostet, und einige haben auch einen Stück nach Hause mitgebracht. Danach ist die Gruppe nach Cervia gefahren, wo sie das Salzmuseum besichtigt und das Meer gesehen haben. Zu erwähnen ist das Mittagessen, wo sie drei Stunden lang herrliches Fisch gegessen haben. Das war ,,einfach einzigartig!”.
Am Freitag haben wir vom TER Team die Gruppe in Bologna [link al set di foto flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/tourismusemiliaromagna/sets/72157629494238474/] getroffen. Das war ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis für sie sowie für uns. Wir sind gemeinsam durch die Stadt gelaufen. Höhepunkt waren die antiken Gebäude und die weltlängsten Arkaden.
Was sie hinzu besonders gefunden haben waren auch die Spezialgeschäfte, die Boutiquen, das Essen und die Landschaft.
Hier unten stehen einige Gedanken der Gruppe über die Reise:
- Es war eine gut organisierte Fahrt. Besonders hat mir die Führung in Ravenna gefallen. Weiterhin waren die vielen Tipps (z. B. Turm in Bologna) wertvoll. Auch die Empfehlungen für die Lokale konnten wir gut gebrauchen.
- Gute Mischung aus Information und „freier Verfügung“. Besonderer Höhepunkt der Abend bei den Canterini Romagnoli. Vielen Dank an unsere Reiseleiter und die italienischen Freunde.
- Ich bin verzückt über mein bella Italia! Ich genoss diese Tage sehr. Vielen Dank für die perfekte Organisation (ohne starr zu sein). Das Hotel fand ich sehr gut.
- Es waren schöne Ferien vom „Ich“. Alles war sehr gelungen. Leider müssen wir jetzt zuhause wieder Gemüsesuppe essen wegen der Linie.
- Fühlte mich sehr gut mit Infos vor und während der Reise versorgt! Wahrscheinlichkeit der erneuten Teilnahme ziemlich hoch! Danke für Euer Engagement!
- Unsere erste Bürgerreise ist sicherlich nicht die letzte. Alles war professionell vorbereitet und dito umgesetzt. Unser Fazit: Wir sind voll begeistert! Mille Grazie.
- Ich fand den Urlaub super, einfach toll, viel Kultur und ein besonderes Programm.
- Super Programm mit vielen Insiderinfos zu Land & Leuten, gutes Hotel, nette Mitreisende, ergo runde Sache. Bestimmt nicht zum letzten Mal dabei!
- Vielen Dank für die schöne Reise. Die Infos waren wertvoll und gut rübergebracht. Leicht verständlich und trotzdem sehr informativ. Das war toll! Auch der Tag in Bologna war sehr schön.
- Unsere Organisatoren ein dickes Lob. Alles war bestens vorbereitet und gemanaged. Sie waren für alle Fragen, Wünsche und Belange immer offen u. sehr hilfsbereit. Die Besichtigungen in Ravenna mit den vielen tollen Mosaiken waren ein Highlight. Alles Andere, was geboten wurde (Treffen mit dem Freundeskreis, die Bewirtung, der wunderschöne Gesang), Salzmuseum, Fischessen, Grubenkäsezubereitung, die Landschaft, usw. habe ich sehr genossen. Dann Bologna: Die Stadt mit ihren wunderbaren Gebäuden, den beiden Türmen und den Kirchen war sehr beeindruckend. Natürlich hat die gute Führung mit den ausführlichen Erklärungen viel dazu beigetragen. Die vielen Arkaden (38 km) haben mich bei diesem regnerischen Wetter sehr begeistert. Vielen Dank, dass wir das alles erleben durften. Ich möchte noch die vielen Spezialgeschäfte erwähnen, die ich so noch nicht bewusst erlebt habe.
- Barbara [Präsidentin des Freundeskreis Speyer-Ravenna und Organisatorin der jährlichen Bürgerreise]: in der Tat waren wirklich alle begeistert von der Reise. Besonders kommen immer die Führung in Ravenna und das gute Essen an. Und so ein Menù a base die pesce, das gibt es bei uns einfach nicht, in Cervia haben wir von 12.00 bis 15.30 Uhr gegessen, das war ein sehr großes Vergnügen für alle…
Eine Mitreisende hat in Ravenna sechs Paar Schuhe und drei Handtaschen gekauft, Schuhe, das ist auch immer noch sehr beliebt, alle sagen: “Solche Schuhe wie in Italien, die findet man bei uns einfach nicht!”…
