[my Emilia Romagna #2] Why Ravenna?
Nicholas Montemaggi November 23, 2011Why Ravenna? Why not Florence, where I’ve spent my first long stay in Italy. Well, I have to admit that I have never heard about Ravenna, I have only read about this beautiful city in our local newspaper in articles describing the twinning and the trips that every year a group of citizens of Speyer used to do to Ravenna. It looked very interesting, so I decided to take part to the twinning program and to the trip.
No sooner said than done, and so my devotion and passion for Ravenna and the Emilia Romagna Region started. And now my dear friends from Ravenna say that “Barbara already knows more about Ravenna then we do”, maybe they are exaggerating a bit but I’m really glad to hear that!
What does make Ravenna so different compared to other Italian cities? Well, there are a lot of UNESCO sites, eight to be precise, wonderful mosaics, the seaside and a beautiful piazza, all things that we do not have here. But is this the only reason? No, it is not, the people make the difference! People in Ravenna are so “noisy” exactly like the people coming from the Palatinate, they are food lovers, friendly, open and helpful like us, and when they are telling you something they touch your arm, like people used to do here.
There is Claudia, who has never been in Speyer, but every year she guides us through the city with enthusiasm, and after every guided tour with her, Ravenna has got new fans.
Then, there is Noemi, who gives me every time I come a pot of caramelized figs (homemade) and some squacquerone, as she knows that I deeply love it.
I can’ forget to mention Bruno. He is not only the best honey maker in the world but he will always struggle to do the best for you and he is even trying to learn German, (he will never succeed I think) but this is not important, because we speak in Italian between us, and we understand each other very well!
Ravenna die Schönheit liegt im Inneren (Ravenna where the beauty lies inside), I have read this sentence somewhere, and I can confirm that this is true!

Warum Ravenna?
Warum Ravenna? Warum nicht Florenz, wo ich meinen ersten längeren Italienaufenthalt verbrachte? Tja, woran liegt das? Ich muss zugeben, ich hatte von Ravenna kaum jemals gehört, las aber, in der lokalen Presse alljährlich von den erfolgten sogenannten Bürgerreisen in die Partnerstadt Ravenna.
Das klang stets alles sehr interessant, also entschloss ich, dass ich auch einmal mitfahre. Gesagt, getan und so fing alles an mit der Leidenschaft für Ravenna und die Romagna. Mittlerweile heißt es bei den ravennatischen Freunden: „Barbara sa più di noi di Ravenna“, das dürfte wohl etwas übertrieben sein, aber es freut mich dennoch, wenn sie das sagen.
Aber was hat Ravenna, was es nicht auch in anderen italienischen Städten gibt, klar, jede Menge UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätten, acht an der Zahl, wunderschöne Mosaiken, Strände und eine Piazza, das haben wir alles nicht. Nein, das ist es nicht, es sind die Menschen. Sie sind genauso laut wie Pfälzer, genauso herzlich, gastfreundlich, verfressen, hilfsbereit, packen dich beim Erzählen am Arm genauso wie es hier üblich ist.
Da ist Claudia, die zwar noch nie in Speyer war, aber die uns seit Jahren jedes Mal so begeistert durch ihre Heimatstadt führt, dass Ravenna bereits nach der Stadtführung neue Fans gewonnen hat. Dann ist da Noemi, die mir immer ein Glas selbstgemachte Fichi Caramellati nebst Squacquerone mitbringt seit sie weiß, dass das mir schmeckt. Und dann ist da natürlich Bruno, der nicht nur fantastischen Honig macht, alles für dich tut, sondern auch seit Jahren Deutsch lernt, es aber wohl nie lernen wird, aber das macht auch nichts, denn wir sprechen ja italienisch und verstehen uns bestens.
Ravenna, la bellezza è dentro, die Schönheit liegt im Innern, das habe ich einmal irgendwo gelesen und ich denke, genauso ist es!

Barbara Mattes is since 2004 Chairwoman of the Freundeskreis Speyer-Ravenna. Ravenna and Speyer are twinned since 1989. Every year during Easter a bus brings a group of citizens from Speyer to Ravenna, and the “ravennati” (the inhabitants of Ravenna) are going as well twice a year, for the Brezelfest in Juli and for the Christmas Market in December, to Speyer.
